If you are to ask me about how the idea of the Malaika Children's Mobile Library came to life, I would tell you the story very well.
My name is Rosey Sembatya. I run the Malaika Children's Mobile Library. Making fun books accessible to families is my passion.
I remember that Saturday morning when my sister,Hellen called me to say that my then 7 year old nephew had read all the books I had bought for him two days back; all the three. Wow! Being a lover of books, I surely didn't know whether to feel fantastic or feel what that meant to my pockets.
Sustaining this reading appetite made me realize that it's possible that I am not the only Auntie who is in this predicament; wanting my nephew to enjoy books without puncturing a hole in my pocket. I decided that I would start a borrow and return space that makes fun and interesting storybooks available, delivered to the children through their parents.
It has been an amazing journey of children dancing with joy once their packs of books arrive through our boda delivery service; of children receiving accolades as excellent readers in the schools they attend ;of children encountering new worlds through books, and us learning so much about what children love to read from the Reading Wish lists that they make.
From its conception in 2014, the mobile library has served a total of 400 families and have had story books delivered to readers in Kampala and all its suburbs,Jinja and most recently we have readers from Gulu whose books we put on the early morning Friday bus.
I would like to subsidise our mobile library service so that more families can get to access fun and exciting story books amid this recession.
This crowd funding campaign has been started to raise some money to buy atleast 1000 books in bulk. This will ensure that we are enabled to introduce our new package that charges 100,000 Uganda Shillings(equivalent of USD 27) for books delivered to children every Friday for 4 months starting this August 2022.
You can support this cause by buying a book for as low as 10,000Ugx( equivalent of USD 3) through the
Dolphin Fund Link.
