You can make a difference in a poor kid’s life
Background
In Uganda, 2,700,000 children have lost either one or both of their parents as a result of the ongoing AIDS epidemic that continues to be a heavy burden to Uganda society. Thousands of Uganda children grow up without adult guidance and care because of AIDS.
Many children are frequently forced to drop out of school in an effort to help their families survive. Because of HIV/AIDs, poverty, war, natural disasters, and civil strife, the number of child-headed households in Uganda has been on the rise: around 42,000 children between the ages of 10 to 17 are primary income source of the households. Their economic situation is often precarious.
The under-five-mortality rate in Uganda remains high at 12.8% and in thousands of cases births are not attended by skilled medical staff. Infections viral diseases that are easily curable in industrialized nations cost the lives of many children.
Children who lose their parents and end up living in the streets, scavenging and begging in order to survive are omnipresent in Uganda’s larger cities. The country is home to around 10,000 street children who are exposed to a harsh and often hostile environment on daily basis. Children find themselves trapped in a vicious cycle of drugs, poverty, and quite frequently criminal activities.
Local Context
In Teso sub region, most people need to take low paid jobs simply to survive. Nearly 85% of the region’s population lives on less than $1 a day, medical care is scant, with only four doctors and 28 nurses per 100,000 people.
In this region, one out five children will have to drop from school because the family cannot financially support his or her educational dream, in most cases they will take a low-paid job, to help their families survive.
If one can provide monthly financial support, this poor kid will have an opportunity to receive primary, secondary (high school), and tertiary education, his or her life can be completely changed. In such cases, this poor kid will be able to receive the same educational opportunities locally, just like those kids born in USA/Canada. By doing so, you can open a door of great potentials for this kid, which otherwise would have been closed due to family’s financial problem.
Sponsoring a child through IYAU not only provides a child with the opportunity to go to school, but it also gives them a chance with a better future, by providing a safe refuge away from the dangers of informal settlement in which they live.
The monthly fees include:
School fees (Tuition)
School supplies; uniforms, shoes, school bags, pens, and books
School meals
Basic medical care, which can save lives
Personal child/family support to boost household income through the provision one female goat per household for sponsored children
Our selection process for this programme is very strict, with two different social workers assessing the same families to ensure that all the information that we receive is correct. The programme administrator then also conducts random checkups visits to the selected households.
The selection criterion is based on the kid’s education situation, dropout reason, and learning desires and potentials, we also consider the family’s poverty levels, disability, HIV/AIDs and other family situations.
The children who are chosen often live in a single roomed mud huts without any facilities, come from single parent (often female-headed) households, are taken care by vulnerable grandmothers or guardians with very low incomes, only receive one small meal a day and are malnourished. Some of them are also disabled and suffer from different family situations (alcoholism, mental problems, extreme poverty, and various diseases’ including HIV/AIDS). These children’s parents or guardians have no capability or desire to send them to school.
When you sponsor a child, you will connect personally with a boy or girl who will treasure and value the thought that someone out there cares about her/his future. Your support will provide life-changing opportunities.
You are a child only sponsor. As you exchange letters and photos, you will form a bond that can last an eternity.
Your monthly contribution will be primarily focused on sponsoring the child you would like to.
Correspond with your child through letters and pictures (only if you want). Receive regular updates and even arrange to visit if you like
You can make the world a better place. To receive a basic education is an impossible dream for many kids here, what is most valuable is that, a poor kid can realize that they are valued and loved by their sponsored family. When you choose to sponsor a child, you can help provide them a quality education, food, proper medical care, and a safe place to live. Your monthly or annual contribution will include school fees (tuition), school supplies, school meals, access to basic medical care, and personal child/family support.
We find that pairing our students with two sponsors increases financial security for the child, as well as for the organisation as a whole. While we strongly advocate for co-sponsorship, full sponsorship is also available for those who wish to be their child’s sole sponsor.

It is incredibly motivating for a child to meet their sponsors and often results in improved performance in academics, as well as a boost in confidence and self-esteem.
For those who are un-able to travel to Uganda-worry not! Our sponsors will receive access to a private online portal where they can see timeline; updates (photos, videos, letters, and grade reports) for their sponsored student(s). We also encourage you to correspond so you have the opportunity to share and learn about one another’s lives.
In addition, you will receive our bi-monthly sponsorship spotlight mailing (exclusive to sponsors) with updates and highlights on lives of our students. We are committed to building a world where every child grows up in a safe and loving family. Your gift helps us create innovative solutions that can make this dream a reality.
